But in execution, as I said, it becomes immediately obvious the author cared more about atmosphere than plot, characters, etc. Ellis makes it her duty to convince Felicity that ghosts aren’t real, even as she embarks on a mission to gain more experience for her next novel, based on the school, the ghost stories that take place there, and Felicity herself.Įverything about the summary of this book is perfect: twisted and creepy and slightly off-putting. Felicity is, in her own, though slightly paraphrased, words, batshit insane she sees ghosts and horrors everywhere she turns. Naturally their relationship develops from there in particularly strange and convoluted way, one that doesn’t entirely make sense-it really does seem like Felicity’s attraction to Ellis is forced, and where Ellis’ attraction to Felicity comes from, God knows-and things slowly, carefully, creepily go to shit. We follow our main character Felicity, still reeling from the death of her girlfriend and subsequent stint in a mental hospital, as she returns to her highly esteemed school, where she shares a house with famous teen writer Ellis. Sometimes the vibes of a book can carry it-think IF WE WERE VILLAINS-but other times it becomes repetitive and off-putting and a waste of time.Ī LESSON IN VENGEANCE is a perfect example of the latter. It is incredibly obvious to me when authors focus on atmosphere over the actual story.
